The Carter-Gilmer House was built in 1820 by Dr. Charles Gilmer in the Federal style of architecture. The building housed five generations of the Gilmer family until it was sold in 1955. Shortly after it was acquired by architect Henderson Heyward, whose firm converted the building into apartments.[2]
