The park is in the vicinity of the historical Monacan Indian village of Monasukapanough, as well as the 19th-century village of Rio Mills, according to Virginia Department of Historical Resources signs #G-29 and G-26, respectively. [5]
The property is being developed by Albemarle County under the application SDP201900080.
