The Belle Mont Estate was a 551-acre plantation what would later become much of the Belmont-Carlton neighborhood. [1] When its last owner, Slaughter Ficklin, died in 1886, the property was sold to the Belmont Land Company and an urban grid system was developed.

Mansion
The estate house is referred to as Belmont House, (also known as the John Winn House, the Ficklin Mansion). The house and property at 759 Belmont Avenue is the namesake of the Belmont Neighborhood.
- Often confused with East Belmont - a historic farm and national historic district located near Keswick in Albemarle County.
Ownership History
- 1820: Charles Winn acquires the property from Charles Bankhead
- 1846 or 1847: Slaughter Ficklin acquires the property at auction
- 1891: Purchased by Belmont Land Company
