Laufer is a city school board member who was elected to the Charlottesville School Board in the 2011 election. [2][3]

She won reelection to a second term in November 2015. [4]

Laufer announced her candidacy on February 28, 2017 in CitySpace. She won the endorsement of Tom Perriello in late April. [5]
