Amy Carter Reid (April 1, 1913 - June 13, 2008) was a Baptist pastor in Albemarle County. [1]

Biography

Reid was born to Mariah Carter in Albemarle County in 1913. She was raised in the county, attending schools there - likely the Jefferson School -until the late 1930s, when she moved to New York City to attend the Berean Bible Institute. Following graduation in 1941, she was licensed to preach and by 1944 had been ordained by the Gospel Ministry.

After ordination, Amy moved back to Charlottesville, and married James Reid, with whom she raised five daughters: Evelyne, Ernestine, Gladys, Vernesse, and Barbara.

Reid spent her entire career preaching in Albemarle County, between the Wildon Grove Baptist Church in Gordonsville and the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville. She spent 44 years preaching, and was also the President of Church Women United, as well as membership in the Piedmont Baptist's Association, the Lott Carey Missions Convention, and the Ministers & Deacons Union.[1]

Later in her life, Pastor Reid was one of several prominent Black women painted by Frances Brand as part of her "Firsts" Collection.[2]
