Alice Jackson Stuart (1913-2001) was the first African-American woman to apply for a Master's program at the University of Virginia. She had graduated from Virginia Union University and also attended Smith College. She wanted to get an advanced degree in French, but none of the black universities or colleges in Virginia offered the program. The Board of Visitors denied her application outright. Stuart and the NAACP sued and eventually the General Assembly agreed to pay for Stuart and other African-Americans to attend schools outside of the state. [1]
