5th Congressional District of Virginia

Parts of Charlottesville and Albemarle County are represented in Virginia's fifth congressional district. It is Virginia's largest congressional district by area at 10,181.03 square miles.

The district is generally south of Albemarle, containing parts of the surrounding Greene County Nelson County, Fluvanna County and Buckingham County, and further afield, Campbell, Bedford, Cumberland, Appomattox, Prince Edward, Charlotte, Lunenburg, Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Fauquier, Rappahannock and Madison County, as well as the cities of Bedford and Danville.

Election history

2020

Incumbent Denver Riggleman of Nelson County was defeated by challenger Bob Good in a drive-thru convention held at the Tree of Life Ministries in Campbell County. There were 2,437 delegates and Good won 58 percent of the vote. [1] [2]


2016

The current[when?] incumbent, Republican Robert Hurt, is not seeking a fourth term creating an open seat.

Former Albemarle County supervisor Jane Dittmar became the Democratic nominee in early May 2006. Another Democrat, Ericke Cage, dropped out on January 25, 2016. [3]

The Republican candidate is State Senator 5th Congressional District of Virginia on wikipedia. [4]

Garrett was selected at a convention on May 14, 2016. [5] Other candidates were entrpreneur Jim McKelvey, Michael Del Rosso and Joseph Whited. [6] [7] [8] Andrew Griffin had been a candidate but dropped out of the race.

2018

Five people are seeking the Democratic nomination to face freshman incumbent Tom Garrett. The Democrats will a convention rather than a primary.
