Oberdorfer's Dry Goods and Ladies' Ready to Wear

The original Oberdorfer's store

The Oberdorfers were a German-Jewish family that immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century. They moved to Charlottesville and opened a store at the northeastern corner of Third and East Main Streets in 1888. [2]

They moved into a new store at the same location in 1917. This structure was built with three stories.

W.T. Grant

The building was purchased by a chain franchise called W.T. Grant in 1934. The company opted to remove the second and third floor due to insurance concerns with renters. [2]
