The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in Charlottesville-Albemarle is an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome. The outbreak was identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 [1]
The first case in Virginia was announced by the Virginia Department of Health announced on March 8, 2020; a Fairfax Health District resident tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus. Health officials say the case was exposed through travel. [2]
The Virginia Department of Health’s Thomas Jefferson Health District (TJHD) made an announcement on Monday, March 16, 2020 of the first coronavirus case reported in Charlottesville. A Charlottesville resident tested positive for 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). It believes the woman likely caught the virus while travelling to an area on the west coast, where the virus is more wide-spread.
This is the first pandemic known to be caused by a new coronavirus. In the past century, there have been four pandemics caused by the emergence of new influenza viruses.
