2017 election

The general election for 2017 will be held on November 7. Two seats for Charlottesville City Council are up for election as are three seats on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors.

Additionally, there are three seats open on the Charlottesville School Board and three seats on the Albemarle County School Board.

Charlottesville

City Council

There is a crowded field emerging for the two seats on the City Council. Three Democrats are vying for two nominations in the June 13 primary. Four independents are vying to be on the November ballot. The Democrats are Bob Fenwick, Heather Hill and Amy Laufer. The independents are Nancy Carpenter, Paul Long, Nikuyah Walker and Dale Woodson.

The terms of Fenwick and Kristin Szakos are the two that expire at the end of 2017. Szakos is not seeking seek a third term, leaving at least one open seat as Fenwick is seeking a second term. [1]

Hill announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination on February 21. [2] Laufer announced on Feb. 28. [3]

Fenwick announced his candidacy for re-election on March 29, 2017. [4]

Woodson was the first candidate to file paperwork in 2017. [5] He has not made a formal announcement.

Independent Nikuyah Walker announced her candidacy on March 14, 2017. [6]

Transportation activist Long did not hold a formal announcement for his 2017 run. Instead he coordinated a protest of a tax incentive project for the Landmark Hotel on the Downtown Mall. [7]

Independent Nancy Carpenter is also running. [8]

The Democratic primary will be held on June 13.

Campaign forums

  • The Democratic party held an informal forum on April 15, 2017. [9]
  • The League of Women Voters will hold a campaign forum in City Council chambers on May 3 at 6:30 pm.
  • EPIC will hold a campaign forum for the Democratic candidates at the Haven on May 9.
  • Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club will hold a campaign forum in City Council chambers on May 10 for all the candidates, both Democratic and independent.
  • Charlottesville Tomorrow will hold a forum for the Democratic candidates in City Space on May 17 at 6:00 pm.
  • The Greenbrier Neighborhood Association will hold a forum on May 24 for all candidates at at Greenbrier Elementary School at 7:00 pm

School Board

The Charlottesville School Board seats held by Ned Michie, Leah Puryear and Juandiego Wade are up for election in 2017. Wade and Puryear will seek reelection, but Michie will not. [6] Lisa Larson-Torres has announced her run.

Other races

Jeff Fogel and Joe Platania are vying for the Democratic nomination for Commonwealth's Attorney to replace the retiring Dave Chapman.

There is currently no opposition for Commissioner of Revenue Todd Divers, Treasurer Jason Vandever or Sheriff James Brown.

Albemarle County

In Albemarle County, the Jack Jouett, Rio and Samuel Miller magisterial seats are up for re-election. So far, only the Samuel Miller District race is contested.

Jack Jouett District

Supervisor

Incumbent supervisor Diantha McKeel announced she will seek a second term on the board on March 1, 2017. [10] In 2013 she ran as an independent but is running as a Democrat this time around. There is no opposition as of the beginning of May.

School Board

Incumbent school board member Kate Acuff will seek a second term on the board. She currently has no opposition.

Rio District

Supervisor

Incumbent supervisor Brad Sheffield, a Democrat, is not seeking a second term. Ned Gallaway announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination on March 8. [10] No other candidates have yet come forward.

School Board

School board member Pam Moynihan has announced she will not run for another term. Mary McIntyre and Katrina Callsen are running against each other for office for the first time as candidates for the Rio District seat. [11][12]

Samuel Miller District

Supervisor

John Lowry announced his campaign for the Republican nomination on February 23, 2017. [13]

Incumbent Liz Palmer will seek another term and made a formal announcement in March. The audio of that announcement will be posted here shortly.

This race is currently the only supervisor raced that is contested.

School Board

Graham Paige will seek a full four-year term on the school board. He is being challenged by Julian Waters, a current high school senior at Western Albemarle High School. [12]
