2013 election

The general election will be held on November 5, 2013, in which voters will select three members of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, Albemarle County School Board, two members of the Charlottesville City Council and ### members of the Charlottesville School Board.

Albemarle County

The seats on the Albemarle Board of Supervisors currently held by Dennis Rooker, Rodney Thomas, and Duane Snow are all up for reelection.

Jack Jouett District

Board of Supervisors

On April 3, 2013, Dennis Rooker announced he would not seek a fourth term for the Jack Jouett Magisterial District. Instead, he endorsed fellow independent Diantha McKeel. [1]

School Board

Katherine Lee Acuff filed her candidacy papers the week of June 3, 2013. [citation needed]

Rio District

Board of Supervisors

Thomas announced on December 5, 2012 that he will run for a second-term. Brad Sheffield, assistant director of JAUNT, announced he would seek the Democratic nomination on April 23, 2013. [2]

School Board

Samuel Miller District

Board of Supervisors

Snow announced his candidacy for a second term on February 27, 2013. [3]

Liz Palmer announced on April 11, 2013 that she would seek the Democratic nomination to challenge Snow in the general election. [4]

School Board

Charlottesville

City Council

The Charlottesville City Council seats held by Dave Norris and Kristin Szakos will be up for reelection. Szakos is running for re-election. Norris is not seeking a third term. [5] [6]

The Charlottesville Democratic Committee chose its nominees during a statewide primary on June 11, 2013. [7]

Szakos announced her candidacy for a second term on February 14, 2013. [8] At the time she was introduced by Wes Bellamy, who said he would not be a candidate. However, he changed his mind and announced on March 13, 2013. [9]

  • Bob Fenwick, a former Republican who ran as independent in 2009 and 2011, ran as a Democrat in the spring of 2013. [10]

The two other Democratic candidates for the June 11 primary were:

Szakos placed first in the primary with 1,370 votes, or 29 percent of the vote. Fenwick and Szakos tied with 1,088 votes apiece and count of provisional ballots was due to be completed by Friday, June 14, 2013. [13]

Republican resurgence

On April 25, 2013, retiring police sergeant Mike Farruggio and attorney Buddy Weber announced they will run as Republicans. This will be the first time the party has run multiple candidates since 2000. [14]

School Board

Special election for treasurer

Judge Edward Hogshire ruled that the city must hold a special election for treasure and it was held on April 2, 2013. [15] The Charlottesville Democratic Committee has chosen to hold a firehouse primary to choose its nominee. [7] Jason Vandever defeated John Pfaltz with 75 percent of the vote. [16]

Commissioner of Revenue

Two Democrats sought the nomination to succeed Lee Richards as commissioner of the revenue. Jonathan Stevens and Todd Divers were the two candidates vying to be the winner in the June primary. [6] Divers defeated Stevens. [citation needed]
