Overview

The budget process is shepherded by the county's Office of Management and Budget (OMB), which is part of the office of the County Executive. It then must be approved by the Board of Supervisors by April 15 each calendar year.

County executive Thomas Foley unveiled a proposed budget of $311,677,759 in late February 2012. The proposed budget was balanced on an equalized tax rate of 76.4¢, resulting in no tax increase for the average homeowner for the fourth year in a row. [1] The proposed budget included $1.5 million in unappropriated revenue, which Foley recommended should be allocated to the capital improvement program. The capital program for FY2013 is $21.5 million, and includes funds to begin construction of the new Crozet Library.

The Board of Supervisors voted 5-1 on April 4, 2012 to set the tax rate at 76.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. [2] Supervisor Ken Boyd voted against the increase. On April 11, the Board voted 4-2 to adopt the budget with Boyd and Rodney Thomas voting against. [3]
