  • May 92009 election: The Charlottesville Democratic Party opted that year to hold a firehouse primary, also called a firehouse caucus or "unassembled caucus", to determine nominees for two at large seats on the City Council.[1]
  • May 16 Motorcycle wreck: A man going around 70mph crashes at the intersection of Sixth Street and Druid Avenue and was in serious condition.[2] Posted speed limit was 25mph.
  • May 18 – A blaze in the 1800 block of Barracks Road around 2:30pm kills two cats. A man and woman in the house escape, as does a dog.[3]
  • May 21The Hook reported on the latest update for 25,000 city voters whose information was in stolen laptops: No one's reported any identity theft yet, writes Registrar Sheri Iachetta. Two laptop computers, stolen from Tonsler Park on November 5, 2008, contained names, addresses, DMV identification numbers and years of birth of 25,000 city voters. Worried citizens could get new ID numbers from the DMV. [4]
  • July 1 – Okayed in May, the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority wholesale rate increases for fiscal year 2010 went into effect: Albemarle's water jumped 11.3 percent and Charlottesville's 7.7 percent; Sewer rates went up 12.53 percent for Albemarle and 12.9 percent for the city. The previous year, the county saw wholesale rates up 2.44 percent for water and 10.65 percent for sewer, while Charlottesville's wholesale rates climbed 2.65 percent for water and 10.43 percent for sewer.   • July 20 – Charlottesville City Council amends zoning ordinance to create a new section regulating Single Room Occupancy facilities within the city [6]
