- May 9 – 2009 election: The Charlottesville Democratic Party opted that year to hold a firehouse primary, also called a firehouse caucus or "unassembled caucus", to determine nominees for two at large seats on the City Council.[1]
- May 16 Motorcycle wreck: A man going around 70mph crashes at the intersection of Sixth Street and Druid Avenue and was in serious condition.[2] Posted speed limit was 25mph.
