On June 9, 1964, Charlottesville voters turned out in modest numbers to give the three-man Democratic ticket a clear victory in the City Council election. A total of 3,123 votes were cast in the election, which returned Mayor Bernard J. Haggerty and Vice Mayor Lindsay B. Mount to their second terms on Council and gave a substantial victory to the third Democrat, Burkett A. Reynolds, in his first campaign for public office. Dr. John H. Knight, the Republican candidate, lost his bid for election to the seat being vacated by Council’s only GOP member, Robert E. Lee. [1]
