Deaths

  • January 13 – John Paul Jr., a retired federal judge who issued one of the earliest school desegregation orders in Virginia, died in his sleep at his home in Harrisonburg, Va. He was 80 years old. Judge Paul's historic decision, that the Charlottesville public schools end segregation, was made on August 7, 1956. It set off the state's "massive resistance" to the Supreme Court school decree. Paul was nominated by President Herbert Hoover (R) on December 15, 1931, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. He received his commission on January 14, 1932 and served as Chief Judge from 1948 to 1958.
