The 1924 Sterilization Act was a Virginia State law that allowed for the sterilization of people "afflicted with hereditary forms of insanity that are recurrent, idiocy, imbecility, feeble-mindedness or epilepsy."[1] The University of Virginia played a role in the research and advocacy that made the law possible.[2] Harvey E. Jordan and Ivey Foreman Lewis were key eugenicists at the university. Through their work, UVA and Virginia became a bastion for eugenics in the United States.
