  • October 10 - The long-time bachelor Thomas S. Martin married Lucy Chambliss Day (1875-1915) of Smithfield, daughter of a local politician and twenty years Martin’s junior. The couple would have two children, Thomas Staples, Jr., and a daughter, Lucy. Martin represented Virginia in the United States Senate for nearly twenty-five years.

  • December 15: On this Monday, B. R. Pace, ex-Mayor of Charlottesville and president of the People’s National Bank, died suddenly in Charlottesville. Death is supposed to have been due to the bursting of a blood vessel. According to the Westminster, Md. Democratic Advocate newspaper, Mr. Pace was reported to have been 60 years of age.[1]
