Events

  • August 6 – The First Battalion of Colored Infantry of Richmond, Va., under command of Major J. B. Johnson arrived in Charlottesville early this morning. The battalion, headed by their band, marched to the fairgrounds of the Piedmont Industrial and Land Improvement Company, where a dress parade, bayonet exercise, and a sham battle took place.[1]
Organized on June 16, 1876, four black companies combined to form the 1st Battalion Colored Infantry, commanded by Major Richard H. Johnson; Headquartered in Richmond. Most militiamen joined for social and recreational reasons. Uniforms and rank offered social prestige, as did the units’ various activities, including traveling on excursions.
