  • March 4 – Benjamin Harrison is sworn in as the 23rd President of the United States following the November 6, 1888 United States presidential election - the first presidential election Charlottesville voters were eligible to participate independent of Albemarle County.

Elections

  • May 23 – The city election was held this Thursday in Charlottesville. This was the first election under the city Charter using of the residency ward system of selecting City Council members proving representation from different areas of the city. Starting on July 1st, Charlottesville City Council would consist of a Mayor (elected at-large), and twelve Aldermen (three councilmen each elected from their respective wards by plurality vote).
