Events

  • February 26 – A POLL was held in the Court House of the County of Albemarle, on this fourth Saturday in February, to elect a Mayor and Four Aldermen, of the Corporation of Charlottesville.[1]
  • October 23 – "Radical" abolitionist John Brown went on trial for his failed raid at Harpers Ferry.
  • December 2 – John Brown is hanged in Charles Town, Virginia, for leading a raid on the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry and attempting to incite a slave rebellion. The Monticello Guard and a cordon of sentries, under the command of Capt. Charles C. Wertenbaker, had charge around the town immediately in front of the gallows.
  • The post office in Millington closes.
