Events

Founded as the Albemarle Female Institute this year, the school would later become the Rawlings Institute for girls [1] and then St. Anne's-Belfield School.

  • August 28 – Governor Wise, of Virginia, received the first message by the Richmond, Charlottesville, and Staunton telegraph line, which is now finished and in full operation throughout the entire length.[2]
