- City population increased from 600 in 1824 to 957 this year. At that time, Charlottesville had four churches, three hotels, one tavern, two bookstores, tow drug stores, twenty retail outlets, two schools, a library, a printing office, and a volunteer fire department.
- November 12 - The University of Virginia Riot of 1836 occurred this year when members of the student drilling company, the University Volunteers, commandeered the Rotunda and marched through the university’s grounds for two days.
