Events

• In accordance with an act of the Legislature, the county of Albemarle was divided into twenty-one School districts. A description of their limits is recorded in the Order Book for this year, page 312.
• February 3 - The Albemarle County Court ordered William Sudworth Hugh Dobbins and John Lyon to view the site of a proposed road from the North Garden through Ivy Creek Pass to Rockfish Road (as per a petition by Thomas Walker) and report their findings to the next court. Overseer George Taylor, Henry Burras, and John Heard were also ordered to view the path from Three Notch'd Road to Rook's Ford and determine from there the best tracks to Martin King's and John Anthony's Roads, with their findings to be reported at the next court.
• April 7 - The Albemarle County Court declared the road from Samuel Glover's to Horn Quarter to be a public trail and ordered the inhabitants on the South Side Slate River to assist Samuel Glover in clearing the path. The road from Three Notch'd Road to Rook's Ford was also declared to be a public trail, with the aid formerly belonging to the late secretary below the mountains being ordered to assist Thomas Bibb in clearing the path. The road from Glover's Quarter to the Slate River was ordered to be continued as the old road went, with all the male tithables in the area being ordered to assist John Cannon in clearing the path. The aid of all individuals who lived contiguous between Samuel Burk's and a local road were ordered to begin clearing the aforementioned road according to a former court mandate. Henry Martin was ordered to clear a road from the place it came into Hopkin's Road to the county line, with the aid of local individuals being ordered to assist Martin in this endeavor. James Martin was appointed overseer of half of the road that William Morrison formerly oversaw, with half of the individuals living on the aforementioned road being ordered to assist Martin in clearing the path. Joseph Smith was appointed overseer of the Horn Quarter Road from the county line to Glover's Road, with the aid of several individuals living near Hatcher's Creek being ordered to begin clearing the path. All of the hands from the South Side Slate River who were not already engaged in other projects were ordered to assist William Allen on the road he was clearing. Robert Adams was appointed overseer of the road that Thomas Martin formerly oversaw, with Martin's hands being transferred to the authority of Adams. William Barnett was appointed overseer in place of Thomas Herbert and was assigned the same hands who had been in the employ of the latter individual. The road from the courthouse to Shepherd's Ford was ordered to be carried around the ridge, with John Lewis being appointed overseer of the project in place of Lazarus Dameron and being assigned the same hands who had been in the employ of the latter individual. Andrew McWilliams was appointed overseer in place of William Woods and was assigned the same hands who had been in the employ of the latter individual.
• June 23 - The Albemarle County Court declared Samuel Glover to be overseer of the roads his father formerly oversaw, with the hands of the latter being transferred to the authority of the former. Charles Anderson and other signers of a petition were granted permission for laying off a road, with Nathaniel Hockett and John Bostick being assigned as surveyors to the project. The work of the surveyors on several highways within the county was ordered to be continued according to their past mandates.
• July 21 - The Albemarle County Court granted permission to Alexander Montgomery and other signers of a petition to begin clearing a road according to their preferred specifications, with the condition that the road not pass through any fenced grounds.
• August 25 - The Albemarle County Court ordered a road to be cleared from Beard's Road on the ridge between Appomattox and Willis' to the courthouse and that the old road from Brook's Mill to John Bostick's be kept open, with the male tithables in the area being ordered to clear the paths with John Childers as their overseer. Additionally, a road from Nicholas Davis' Plantation at the Blue Ridge Falls to Beaver Creek was ordered to be opened, with several local male tithables being ordered to clear the path with John Stone as their overseer. The road was also ordered to be extended from there to the South End of the Slate River Mountains, with the hands on the south side of the main river between Beaver Creek and Slate River Mountain to clear the path with James Christian as their overseer. The same road was ordered to be carried from there across the Slate River near the mouth of the Great Creek, with Allen Howard to mark off the path.
• August 27 - The Albemarle County Court ordered Allen Howard, James Daniels, and Thomas Ballow to view a path from the place William Battersby Road turns out of the New Road to the river and decide if there is a convenient place to settle a ferry, with their findings to be reported to the next court. The road from Jones' Ford on the Tye River was ordered to be continued to Swans' Creek Mountain and from there to the mouth of Swans' Creek, with the secretary's road to be continued from the Meadows to join John Harvie's Road. The inhabitants of the Buffalo and Tye Rivers were ordered to begin clearing the path for the road, with William Cabell as their overseer. Charles Lynch and Edwin Hickman were ordered to view the road to the secretary's ford on the Rivanna River and give directions for it to be turned as they saw fit. The workers of Richard Randolph, John Coles, Joseph Fane, and James Hill were added to the group of workers formerly ordered to work under Thomas Jobling. The path from David Lewis' Road to the late secretary's mill was ordered to be maintained by the secretary's workers who lived above the mountain as well as by the inhabitants of Biscuit Run, with Thomas Sowell being appointed as their overseer. A road was ordered to be cleared from the late secretary's mill to the courthouse, with Castleton Harper being appointed as overseer of the workers of several local gentlemen on the project. David Lewis Sr. and the workers formerly appointed to work under him were ordered to continue their path to the secretary's ford. James Taylor (the son of William Taylor) and the workers formerly appointed to work under him were ordered to clear a path from his road to Martin King's Road.
• September 23 - The Albemarle County Court ordered a road to be cleared from Buffalo Island to Harvie's Road and the Second Falls on the Tye River, with James Christian being appointed overseer of the project in the place of John Graves. A road was ordered to be kept open from Meredith Mannings' to the courthouse, with Gideon Marr being named overseer of the project.
• October 21 - The Albemarle County Court ordered a ferry to be kept from the land of William Battersby to the mouth of Totier Creek as well as for the road from the courthouse to be turned by Battersby's house, with Battersby being appointed overseer of the project.
• November 24 - The Albemarle County Court appointed William Harris as overseer of the road from the Rockfish River to the courthouse in place of William Cabell. Leonard Ballow was appointed overseer of Ridge Road from the place where Cabell's Road intersects Freeland's Tract until they meet another group of workers. A road was ordered to be cleared from Burk's Path on the north side of the Rivanna River to the road against Long Island Creek, with William Moseby being appointed as overseer. In place of a road formerly marked by Scruggs, Samuel Jordan was ordered to mark a road from Slate River to Glover's Road. From the county line at Phineas Glover's to Buckingham Path at William Web's, several local male tithables were ordered to begin clearing the aforementioned road with Abraham Childers as overseer, while the other portion of the road from the aforementioned path to the Slate River was ordered to be cleared by other local male tithables with Thomas Fouts as overseer.
