Completed in 1850, the Virginia Central Railroad connected Charlottesville and Richmond by rail for the first time. The construction was completed by over 400 slaves. The first trips on the railroad were undertaken by small trains with top speeds of 12 to 15 miles, making the journey to Richmond last five hours [1]

History

The Virginia General Assembly granted permission for the Louisa Railroad to build in 1839 but construction did not start until the middle of the next decade closely in parallel with the Three Chop't Road.

The name of the company was changed to Virginia Central Railway on February 2, 1850. [2]
