History

The UVA Community Credit Union formed as the University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union in 1954. The name was changed to the University of Virginia Employees Credit Union in 1976. [1]

The current name was adopted in 1997 when the credit union sought to accept accounts from wider community and not just UVA employees. In 2001, the Credit Union expanded into Albemarle, Fluvanna, and Greene. Expansions continued and in 2021 the Virginia State Corporation Commission approved another geographic increase.

"Today our membership is open to everyone living, working, or attending school in, and businesses located throughout Virginia’s Central Piedmont and Valley area with the addition of the following service areas: Amherst County, Augusta County, Bath County, Bedford County, Buckingham County, Campbell County, Cumberland County, City of Harrisonburg, Highland County, City of Lynchburg, Rockbridge County, Rockingham County, City of Staunton, and City of Waynesboro." [1]

New Headquarters

The UVA Credit Union is moving ahead with a proposal to build a new headquarters on Fifth Street Extended. In October 2021, they paid $8.9 million to buy the six acre property, located in Albemarle County, from the Christian Aid Mission. [2]
