UBikes is a bike-sharing service operated by the University of Virginia.

History

Preparation for the project began in 2010 when students came up with the idea and the Commonwealth Transportation Board allocated $35,000 for a planning grant. [1]

Study on the project began after an exploratory grant was received from the Virginia Department of Transportation. [2] The 100-bike project and its 13 stands were originally expected to go live in the spring of 2013. [3]

In its third year of operation, the program does not have any stations in downtown Charlottesville. [4]
