The Peoples National Bank, known colloquially as Peoples Bank, chartered as The Peoples National Bank of Charlottesville and later known as Peoples National Bank of Central Virginia, was a downtown Charlottesville-based financial institution founded in 1876. The bank later evolved into the Virginia National Bank on July 29, 1998. On April 1, 2021, The Fauquier Bank merged with Virginia National Bank. The combined banks are intending to cover the counties of Fauquier, Prince William, and Albemarle, and the cities of Richmond, Winchester, and Charlottesville.[1]

History

The Peoples National Bank of Charlottesville was organized in 1875 and granted National Charter No. 2594 in 1881. [2] [3]

1875 – 1935

The original bank stood at 322 East Main Street, on the south-west corner of East Main and 4th Street. In 1909, the ground floor façade was altered and the top story of the bank building removed after suffering damage from a 1907 fire in the nearby Charlottesville Hardware Store.[4]

In 1915, Marshall Timberlake purchased the building at 322 East Main Street (corner of Fourth and East Main streets) and two years later he established Timberlake Drug Store in the "old" Peoples Bank building.

In 1917, Peoples National Bank moved into a new building on the west end of this block (previously the Nations Bank building).[5]

The U.S. Comptroller of the Currency approved a branch office at the corner of Barracks Road and North Emmett Street. The cost to construct the building was $65,000 and the developer was the Thomas Jefferson Corporation. This was part of the larger development of the Barracks Roads Shopping Center. The one-story brick building with a drive-through was in the Colonial style and featured a serpentine wall between the rest of the shopping center and the bank. [9]
