  • 1778 – The David Lewis Sr., a prominent inhabitant of early Albemarle County, namesake of Lewis Mountain (as well as the accompanying Lewis Mountain Road), which was located on his plantation just west of the University, wrote his Last Will & Testament. The family story says that David was about to marry for the 4th time when he died at the age 93 after over-exerting himself while cutting down a tree on a hot day in August 1779.
