  • 1761 – The General Assembly founded the the town of Charlottesville and established it as the Albemarle County seat. The name was bestowed in honor of Princess Charlotte, bride of George III. The ACT would take effect on January 1, 1762.
  • 1824 – The Marquis de Lafayette is feted by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, along with about four hundred guests, in the topmost floor of the yet unfinished Rotunda. The Visitors appoint Francis Walker Gilmer as the Board’s agent for the purpose of recruiting professors in Great Britain.
  • 1904J. Samuel McCue, for four years Mayor of Charlottesville, was found guilty of the murder of his wife, Fannie McCue on Sunday night, Sept. 4 last. The trial verdict was murder in the first degree, which carries with it the death penalty. The jury deliberated less than half an hour.
  • 1906The New York Times headline reads: PRESIDENT SHOT ONE TURKEY; Returns to Washington Invigorated by His Stay at Pine Knot.
  • 1916The Daily Progress announced the impending nuptials of the Sir Genille Cave-Browne-Cave, formerly of London, to Miss Florence Boltwood, of Esmont. Born in 1869, the bridegroom was a British soldier and adventurer as well as the twelfth holder of the Cave-Browne-Cave baronetcy.
  • 1992 – In honor of Rebecca Fuller McGinness' 100th birthday, the mayor of Charlottesville declared this "Rebecca McGinness Day."
