- 1893 – World's Columbian Exposition opens in Chicago. The fair ran through October 31st, drawing in more than 27 million visitors over its six-month run. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway purchased two engines, built at the Richmond Locomotive Works, specifically constructed for carrying passengers to what was to become known as the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
- 1914 – Albemarle Golf and Tennis Club was organized for the promotion of outdoor sports and games. Forty-eight men comprised the first members.
- 1990 – The Virginia Discovery Museum opens its new Downtown Mall location.
- 2006 – A second vehicular crossing opens at Fourth Street East on the Downtown Mall.
