- 1781 – British cavalry detachment under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton briefly occupied Charlottesville where the General Assembly had convened since May 24th. Several legislators were captured and the rest fled to Staunton. Jefferson himself narrowly escaped capture when Tarleton went looking for him at Monticello. Jefferson followed his family to Poplar Forest.
- 1976 – Former mayor Charles Barbour presided over the opening of Charlottesville's Downtown Mall to the public.
