- 1777 – The Virginia General Assembly passed “An Act to oblige the free male inhabitants of this state above a certain age to give assurance of allegiance to the same and for other purposes.” The Act provided that all free-born male inhabitants above the age of sixteen, except imported servants, were to subscribe to the oath on or before October 10th. Both Jack Jouett and his father, John Sr., were among the 202 Albemarle citizens who signed the Albemarle Declaration, a document renouncing King George III.
- 1836 – James Madison American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father who served as the fourth president of the United States (1809 to 1817), died at Montpelier, his estate at Montpelier Station, VA.
