- 1770 – Shadwell, the Jefferson family estate, burns. Most of Thomas Jefferson's personal and family papers and books are destroyed. By November, Jefferson takes up residence in Monticello's only building, a one room dependency and began construction of a house.
- 1825 – The original start date for classes at the University of Virginia. Storms in the English Channel significantly delayed several professors on their journey to the United States—five of the original seven faculty members were European. Jefferson scrambled to run newspaper advertisements that advised students to wait for further information about the school’s opening. Although the University was founded in 1819, the first classes weren’t held until March 7, 1825.
- 1977 – Fire raced through the sanctuary and education building of the First Baptist Church at the intersection of Second Street NE and East Jefferson Street.
