- 1826 – Although a gifted and popular student, Edgar Allan Poe left the University, never to return. On his last night in Room 13, West Range, Poe spoke earnestly of his debts with William Wertenbaker, the University librarian.
- 1873 – Mary Norris Rawlings, a civic leader and authority on Albemarle County history, was born at her grandfather's house on Park Street.
- 1924 – At a joint session of Congress, Edwin A. Alderman, president of the University of Virginia, eulogized Woodrow Wilson, the nation’s 28th president, who had died February 3. Alderman and Wilson grew up together in Wilmington, N.C., and remained lifelong friends.
- 1958 – Mary B. Proffitt, first known female member of the Seven Society, died at age 77.
- 2004 – The Paramount Theater opened to the public once more after a $16.4 million renovation project. Originally opened on Thanksgiving Eve in 1931 and closed its doors in 1974, the theater had remained vacant for 30 years.
