- 1842 – John Patten Emmet, appointed by Thomas Jefferson as the first professor of the School of Natural History at the University of Virginia died in New York soon after returning from Florida on a ship which had been lost at sea for over a month (aged 47)
- 1865 – Mosby Monroe Parsons, United States officer in the Mexican–American War and brigadier general of the Confederate States Army, was was killed by bandits in Nuevo León, Mexico. (b. 1822 in Charlottesville)
- 2015 – Julian Bond, University of Virginia professor emeritus of history and one of America’s foremost civil rights leaders, died in Florida after a brief illness (aged 75)
