Daily Progress citation

The Daily Progress is frequently cited in cvillepedia. It has both print and web versions, and some stories may also be available online at Charlottesville Tomorrow.

Publisher versions

The Progress as a work has had several publishers. There is a version of the template for each.

  • {{cite-progress}} for citations after March 16, 2020. Publisher is Lee Enterprises}}
  • {{cite-progress-bh}} for citations between May 17, 2012 - March 16, 2020. Publisher is Berkshire Hathaway.
  • {{cite-progress-mg}} for citations since 1995 - May 16, 2012. Publisher is Media General.
  • {{cite-progress-worrell}} for citations January 1, 1971 - 1995. Publisher is Worrell Newspaper group.
  • {{cite-progress-lindsay}} pre-1971. Publisher is Lindsay family

Usage of the five templates is otherwise the same.

Usage

Use this template to cite articles appearing in the Progress, whether print, online, or both. You are encouraged to supply all three places available, but it is not required.

It should look familiar to you if you are used to the {{cite web}} template, but is specifically tailored for use with the Progress.

Parameters

The web version uses the main {{cite web}} template, so if you are used to that, most of those parameters are available to you. Specifically, you can use url, title, author, publishdate, and accessdate exactly as defined from that template.

Differences are below.

parameters removed from cite web

You do not need to pass in the values for publisher or work. Those are passed to cite web by directly this template to assure consistency and as part of the time savings of using this template.

pageno

If you know the print page number, use the pageno parameter.

If you do not use a url, then you must use a pageno. Otherwise it is optional.

printdate

For print-only uses, printdate is required.

Additionally, for web and print uses, if the print date is different from the (web) publishdate, use the printdate parameter for that.

cturl

If you know the Charlottesville Tomorrow web url, here's where you put that.

NOTE: As of July 22, 2010, articles written by Charlottesville Tomorrow that also appear in the printed version of The Daily Progress newspaper no longer have the text of the article appear on The Daily Progress' website. Only the story headlines and lede paragraphs appear online. Thus a reference could refer to story in the printed paper but link only to a Charlottesville Tomorrow URL. Examples

Note we use author and title the same way, throughout.

Print only

Using just a pageno and a printdate,

{{cite-progress |title=Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades |author=Brian McNeil |pageno=12 |printdate=June 30 2009}}

produces:

Print: Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades, Brian McNeil, Daily Progress, Lee Enterprises June 30 2009, Page 12.

Web only

If instead you use a url and a publishdate,

{{cite-progress |title=Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades |author=Brian McNeil |url=http://www.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/belvedere_owner_loses_line_of_credit._county_may_have_to_finish_upgrades/42229/ |publishdate=June 30 2009 |accessdate=June 30 2009}}

produces:

Web. Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades, Brian McNeil, Daily Progress, Lee Enterprises, June 30 2009, retrieved June 30 2009.

Web and print

Just combine the above two examples:

{{cite-progress | title=Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades | author=Brian McNeil | pageno=12 | printdate=June 30 2009 | url=http://www.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/belvedere_owner_loses_line_of_credit._county_may_have_to_finish_upgrades/42229/ | publishdate=June 30 2009 | accessdate=June 30 2009}}

produces: Web. Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades, Brian McNeil, Daily Progress, Lee Enterprises, June 30 2009, retrieved June 30 2009. Print. June 30 2009 page 12.

Web, print, and Charlottesville Tomorrow also

Ultimately, adding a cturl to any variation of the above gives you the link to Charlottesville Tomorrow:

{{cite-progress |url=http://www.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/belvedere_owner_loses_line_of_credit._county_may_have_to_finish_upgrades/42229/ |title=Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades|author=Brian McNeil |pageno=12|printdate=June 30 2009 |publishdate=June 30 2009|accessdate=June 30 2009 |cturl=http://www.foo.com}}

Web. Belvedere owner loses line of credit. County may have to finish upgrades, Brian McNeil, Daily Progress, Lee Enterprises, June 30 2009, retrieved June 30 2009. Print. June 30 2009 page 12. Also available at the Charlottesville Tomorrow News Center.
