New first paragraph?

I was just about to take a pass at editing the first paragraph, which I'm beginning to think is too history-laden and doesn't really talk about what Charlottesville is now. But, this seems like the sort of thing to put out to more people to see what they think. What do you think? --12:25, 19 November 2023 (EST)

As much as I hate to admit it as someone whose interest in this site primarily centers around historical topics rather than current events, I would have to agree with your assessment. This article really ought to serve as one of (if not THE) flagship pages of Cvillepedia and the lead should reflect this by constituting a well-balanced introduction to the city as it is today rather than exclusively detailing its 18th century origins, which in any case are better expounded upon in the History section. I believe that as it stands now, the article on Albemarle County possesses a superior lead by concisely presenting key aspects of the area's history, governance, geographic boundaries and demographics; that article's intro could potentially serve as a source of inspiration in reworking this one's. Yikes! As of today, Chip Boyles is still listed as the City Manager! There's also way too much government on this page, in addition to the historical emphasis. I'm going to make some changes to some of that to direct readers to pages that should be more up to date. I would like to also put a mention of the form of government and the relevant officials higher up in the page. --16:50, 20 November 2023 (EST)
Yep, and there were two Government headings...I deleted one. Rather than making a long list of "current" officials on this page, I would suggest avoiding information that can go stale, condense information under headings and adding a "see also" link. (example: I added See also: City Government under the Government heading. In the City Government page, I added a link to the City Manager page which is usually updated.) ~ Jmh6d (talk) 22:20, 20 November 2023 (EST)

Resources

Someone forwarded me this page on the Charlottesville website with a lot of resources to go through: Charlottesville Archive Center --Seantubbs (talk) 11:25, 16 September 2023 (EDT)

Page management

I removed these external links from the Charlottesville Page. Reason - We don't want to build a list of organizations here. The external links would be those specific to City Government.

Uncertain about government

There's a claim made in the government section about three commissioners being elected, and then another two in 1923. I don't think that's correct. In August 1926, the Daily Progress editorial talked about the need to increase commissioners to five from three. Check it out here. I make this note here and will add it to the page when I can confirm. --Seantubbs (talk) 13:57, 2 August 2016 (CDT)
