' is an Albemarle County public middle schools offering classes in sixth through eighth grade.

Lakeside is part of the Northern Feeder Pattern. Sutherland students attended either Baker-Butler Elementary School, Hollymead Elementary School, or Stony Point Elementary School and will continue on to graduate from Albemarle High School. Sutherland has almost 600 students enrolled and employs 74 staff and faculty members.[1]

The name changed from Mortimer Y. Sutherland Middle School on July 1, 2021 after the name was reviewed. The Albemarle School Board approved the new name on April 1, 2021. [2] [3]

History

Lakeside Middle School was founded in 1994 and was originally named for M.Y. Sutherland Jr., a former principal, school board member, member of the county board of supervisors, and lifelong advocate for quality education.[1] In 2012, what was then called Sutherland Middle School was awarded the Governor's Award for Education Excellence.[4] They met on May 11, 2020 to discuss 14 possible names. [5]
