Additional information

According to an issue of The Richmond Times from April 21, 1898, popular sentiment in Charlottesville and other cities across the state was set firmly against the war upon its initial outbreak, with local military formations being shocked at the idea of fighting abroad for people with whom they felt little attachment. One well-informed individual even stated that "in the neighborhood west of the city, the only volunteers that could be gotten there were those who were prepared to lynch the Congressmen who were so eager to get the country into a difficulty from which they were confident they themselves would be exempt."[2]

Company D of the 3rd Virginia Volunteer Infantry was primarily composed of soldiers from Charlottesville and the surrounding area. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Grenville Gaines until his eventual replacement by Colonel William Nalle.
