Rural area is defined by the Albemarle County Comprehensive Plan. Ninety-five percent of the county's land area is zoned rural area, and includes fields, farms, and forests.
The term stands in contrast to the remaining 5% of county land zoned as designated growth areas.

Rural areas
Rural area is further divided into four areas, designated by number:
- Rural Area 1, in the northern part of the county,
- Rural Area 2, the east,
- Rural Area 3, the west, surrounding Crozet, and
- Rural Area 4, the south.
