Robert N. Tracci was elected as Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney from 2016 to 2023. He defeated Denise Lunsford in the 2015 election. [1] He will seek election to a second term in 2019. [2]

Biography

Tracci is a first generation American and was raised in Chicago, Illinois. He is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Illinois College of Law. He is married to Dr. Margaret Clarke Tracci, Assistant Professor, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Margaret is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Illinois Schools of Medicine and Law. They have a five year-old daughter.

Public service

After graduating from law school in 1999, Tracci served as Counsel,then Chief Legislative Counsel and Parliamentarian to the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary. [3] In this capacity, he served as Counsel to the Committee on issues, including the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the Innocence Protection Act of 2004, the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005, the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, and other criminal justice reforms.

After leaving his position on Capitol Hill, Tracci served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice. In this capacity, he served as a federal prosecutor in Charlottesville, Virginia. As a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Department of Justice, Tracci assisted in prosecuting cases relating to crimes against children, computer crimes, financial services fraud, public corruption, large scale narcotics distribution, criminal offenses within the George Washington National Parkway, unlawful possession of firearms, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, murder for hire, and other matters. He also drafted responses to criminal appellate briefs and reviewed petitions for habeas relief and other matters.

Tracci announced his candidacy for Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney in front of the Albemarle County Circuit Courthouse on June 16, 2015.[4]

Tracci appeared before the Board of Supervisors to lobby for additional funding to pay for an assistant attorney. He stated that Albemarle has one prosecutor per 19,000 residents whereas Stafford County has one per 7,500 residents. [5]
