Robert A. Watson (October 29, 1877-November 20, 1946) was a well known attorney, director and officer of many local businesses.
Robert Anderson Watson was born in Nelson County to A. Sidney and Louise Wheeler Watson. His early life was spent at "Cove Lawn" near Covesville, where his father, a courier for Stonewall Jackson during the War Between the States, was engaged in the orchard business. Receiving his early education at the Cove Academy, Watson attended Washington and Lee University and graduated from the law school in 1901. He became a resident of Charlottesville in 1911 and began the practice of law. Watson served from 1905 to 1909 as police justice, and was a member of the Charlottesville City Council from 1916 to 1918. His brother, Fred L. Watson served on the council from 1928 to 1932.
Watson was a member of the Albemarle County School Board in 1937. [1] In 1938, he was a member of the Charlottesville School Board.
Watson was president of the Charlottesville Woolen Mills, chairman of the board of People's Mortgage Corporation, vice-president of the Charlottesville Perpetual Building and Loan Company; a director of Hanckel-Citizen's Corporation, and the Jefferson-Lafayette Theaters, Inc., and the Jackson Park Hotel Company. He was also a member of the Farmington Country Club, the Redlands Club, and a member and former officer of the Masons and Odd Fellows. A Methodist, Watson was on the Board of Stewards of the First Methodist Church.[2]
