Rio Mills Road/Berkmar Drive Connection

The Rio Mills Road/Berkmar Drive Connection is a planned transportation improvement planned by the Virginia Department of Transportation that is one of six Albemarle County Design-Build Projects combined into one contract.

Curtis Contracting of West Point was awarded a $28.5 million contract by the Commonwealth Transportation Board at their meeting on July 19, 2019. [1]

The project has a total budget of $3.8 million. Engineering is budgeted at $850,000, right of way is budgeted at $500,000 and construction is budgeted at $2.45 million.

Project purpose

"This project will construct a quarter-mile, two-lane road to connect Rio Mills Road to the recently completed Berkmar Drive Extended. The work will include a sidewalk and shared-use path that connects to the bicycle and pedestrian facilities on Berkmar Drive Extended."
