Public hearings online

In response to the continued spread of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, like many other governments in the region, the Charlottesville City Council has been conducting public hearings entirely online. Transition to an all-virtual local government would have benefits and drawbacks.

  • March 14, 2020 - Charlottesville and Albemarle County were in the process of reevaluating their public meetings, canceling some and moving several online amid coronavirus concerns. [1]
  • March 14, 2020 - Following recommendations from the Thomas Jefferson Health District that gatherings of more than 100 people be avoided to limit spread of the virus, the city announced that it has canceled all but one of its public meetings of boards and commissions for the foreseeable future. [2]
  • April 20, 2020 - Charlottesville City Council held its regular monthly meeting using a Virtual Meeting platform via Livestream (view only) utilizing traditional web-based video streams on the City's website, Facebook, and Twitter - these livestreams were view-only. The meeting was broadcast on Comcast Cable Ch. 10 and Livestream (with live comment). Members of the public were given the opportunity to weigh in via a Zoom webinar.
