New Dominion Bookshop
New Dominion Bookshop is a bookstore on the Downtown Mall at 404 E. Main Street operated by Julia Hoppe. It is central Virginia's oldest independent book-seller and, for many years in the early twentieth century, was the only bookstore operating within Charlottesville.
The store was originally given its name by a Mr. Lewis in the late 1910's or early 1920's. C.C. Wells purchased the store from Mr. Lewis in 1926 and moved it from its location on Fourth Street to a new office building on the corner of First Street in the late 1950's or early 1960's; in the years that followed, he once again moved the shop to a new spot on Main Street (directly opposite the store's current location). In 1987, a longtime employee of Wells named Carol Troxell purchased and took over the bookstore. In October of 2017, Hoppe purchased the bookstore.[1]
