Midway Hotel was situated between Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, “equally convenient to both” at the intersection of Ridge and West Main Streets. In 1836, the Hotel was advertised for sale as “a large new brick building, four stories high, with 30 odd rooms in it, with every other necessary building, standing on an eminence commanding an extensive and beautiful view of the Blue Ridge, South West Mountains, the town of Charlottesville, the University, and the surrounding country, a fine garden etc.” Alexander Garrett, agent for the seller John L. Keller, offered to sell “the Hotel (if desired) from 10 to 40 acres of land adjoining.”[1]
During the Civil War (1861-1865), the Midway Hotel served as a hospital. In 1893, the property served as the Midway School Building.
