Marcha Payne Howard retired as the principal of Burley Middle School at the end of the 2008-2009 school year. She was a graduate of the school when it was Burley High School and she worked her entire 40-year career at the school for Albemarle County Public Schools.

Howard's father spent 54 years working at Joker's Barbershop in Starr Hill.[1] Howard is also the great-great-granddaughter of Bezeal "Bee" White and Emma Louisa (the youngest sister of Cain Hawkins). Bee's brother, John Flournoy White, married Sarah Lewis and had five children, the oldest of whom was Randolph Louis White (the founder of The Tribune).[2]
