Events
- 1865 – Sheridan’s men left Charlottesville, riding south in the direction of Scottsville, on the James River. Union soldiers crossed the James River at Scottsville on their way to join General Ulysses Grant at Petersburg. They destroyed canal locks and buildings. The first and only edition of the Third Division Cavalry Chronicle is published.[citation needed]
- 2023 – Charlottesville City Council votes to adopt new precincts beginning with the November 2023 election. Alumni Hall and Tonsler Park were replaced as polling places by Jackson Via Elementary School and Charlottesville High School. [1]
Births
- 1891 – Susie Smith is born in Albemarle County. Raised in Stony Point, Smith worked as a chamber maid for the Valentine family in Charlottesville and had her portrait photograph included within the Holsinger Studio Collection. This image would later be featured in the “Visions of Progress: Portraits of Dignity, Style and Racial Uplift” exhibit that was organized by Professor John Edwin Mason of the UVA Corcoran Department of History and was on display at the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library from 2022 to 2023.
Deaths
- 1917 – Benjamin Tonsler dies of pneumonia at his home. An influential educator throughout his adult life, Tonsler was a prominent leader in Charlottesville's Black community and served as the namesake of Tonsler Park.
