Lidl is a German discount supermarket chain with U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. After years of planning, the chain opened up a franchise in Albemarle County in mid-July of 2021. [1]

Planning

At one point, two Lidl grocery stores were planned in Albemarle County.

In 2016, Timmons Group submitted a site plan for a Lidl store at 1248 Richmond Road on Pantops.[2] [3]

In 2017, Timmons Group submitted a site plan for another Lidl store at 405 Premier Circle on the west side of U.S. 29.[4]

In June 2017, the Albemarle County Department of Community Development granted administrative approval for the Richmond Road Lidl site plan.[5] This project did not get underway.

The store in 29th Place opened in July 2021.
